Mark pointed out to me awhile ago that no one drives with their windows down anymore.
Now, I can't not notice it.
I think it finally occurred to me today why these people are all sealed up in their aerodynamic little transportation pods.
When your trying to carry on a phone conversation in your satellite navigated, XM radioed, TV screen hanging from the ceiling, electronic doo-dadded status symbol, you certainly don't want to be distracted by that pesky out of doors stuff.
I sure would hate for these people to miss something.

I've been yammering on about how I need to carry a tape recorder around to catch all the weirdo conversations I either overhear, or am directly involved in.
I have no idea how to make that happen of course...what with the tape recorder having gone the way of the phone chord and all.

I'd been hearing since August about the Motorama room at this year's World of Wheels.

Supposedly it was to be filled with "Traditional Hot Rods and Customs."

Riiiight.....

I'm not really surprised about what I found in said "Room".
Anytime a subculture gains in popularity it's gonna get bludgeoned to death by the bandwagon.

Thing is,(As the kids say) I'm pretty sure the bludgeoning happened about 10 years ago.

Now, it's just some stupid fucking parody that's left me with this weird voice in my head.
It (The voice) sounds a lot like Rakim (Don't ask, this is why I can't ever answer the question, "So, what kind of music do you like?") saying, "Shitbox Alley."

Crap, did that sound like a complaint?
My apologies, really.

Of course, there were a few nice cars in among the crap, and maybe it's just my dim view of the general public, but something tells me they got over looked.

Oddly, Boston's World of Wheels happened in March this year.
Again, I slid in on set up night.
Not only was the "Motorama Room" I'd been hearing so much about completely pathetic (pictures later) but there where more interesting motorcy..er...bikes at this car show, than there were at the motorcycle show from a few weeks ago.

Before making a phone call, or thinking, "Who do I sue?" why not at least try to maintain control of your vehicle.

Why shifting in to neutral isn't a gut reflex the minute a motor revs without you personally feeding it fuel is a mystery.
Disconnect the revving motor from the transmission, dummy.
THEN...and this may sound crazy....use the emergency brake?
While you were fumbling for your phone, or trying to find your place in the latest "Itunes presents The Works of Tom Clancy" your little plastic car got away from you.
Now, I don't know about you, but in my book this constitutes an emergency.
Just the sort of thing that little lever, manually connected your rear brakes, is for!
It even says so in the name.
Go on, just pull it.
Pull the lever....what's the worst that could happen?

You know, if I wasn't me and reading this, I'd be apt to think, "Sure, easy for you to say. You've never...."
But wait.
I have.
I once drove down rt. 128 from Weston, MA to Adams ST. in Braintree, MA (Google map that if you want) with no brakes.
By "No brakes" mean, nothing.
I won't explain, but if you know how a single master cylinder works, you know what I mean.

At the time, I was a third of your age & managed to make it the 20 odd miles with nothing but neutral and the emergency brake.

It wasn't my first and certainly not the last "Auto Crisis" (there's been a few broken throttle return springs...you want to talk "Sudden Acceleration?") yet, I'm still here to call you a "Fucking Pansy."

So much as just, "Knowing where to go."
There was an indoor motorcycle/fashion show/sausage fest this past weekend at a local "Exposition Center" & I've always found, if you look like you are suppose to be there, it's never a problem to just kind of slide in on "Set up" night.
Having done this year, after year, after year, at both this and the big car show that goes on, I've been able to avoid a ton of the un pleasantries you're apt to find at this sort of affair.
I don't have to look on in horror as some dumb ass parent lets his kid stand on someone's hood to get a better look at a local sports person.
I won't bristle when I hear some steak head tell his friend how much better his bike is gonna be once all the bad-assery he ordered shows up in the mail.
I certainly don't run the risk of being shoved from behind by some doughy under-sexed buffoon, rushing to be first in line for his Polaroid with some plastic-injected swimsuit model and I definitely won't be impeded by the ridiculous lines to buy the autograph of some C-list celebrity.
Nope, set up night is beautiful.
Perhaps my favorite thing to do in the winter.
I can walk around in my own little world and be horrified in the privacy of my head as I try to take in the bullshit people pass off as "Custom", or whatever the label of the month happens to be.
Wel...having said that, I will say this:
I was a bit surprised to find a some cool stuff mixed in with all the plastic do-dads, "Psycho, Old SKool, Retro, Thing-a-ma bobbers,"racks of clothes, stick on tattoo booths, professional rhinestone installers (artists?) and two-wheeled couches.
Here's a few, keeping in mind I've never been a ble to take a decdent picture in that place....or anywhere for that matter.

Apparently I've started giving monthly updates on what amounts to nothing more than playing with toys.
Well, as it turns out, mixing toys and power tools was not exactly the best way to cut a tunnel in to a tiny little gas tank but, as you all know, I'm a "Live on the edge" sort of a guy.

So, for my second attempt (Yes, I have quite a stash of model motorcycle parts, quit laughing) I figured I'd use the right tool for the job,

So, if you happen to find yourself up & watching TV at 3 a.m. (Don't ask, it happens) you're bound to run in to these infomercials for the "New" Blue Blocker Sunglasses that are now, apparently, in HD.
Again, I'm sorry, what?
HD, as in "High Definition"....sunglasses?
If you're wearing them then, you are most likely outside.
You know, the out of doors?
Where the sun is?
With the air?
And....all the stuff?
If you don't find the outdoors already "Highly defined" I think you might have bigger things wrong with you.
The sort of things all the, "As seen on TV" U.V. protection in the world won't help.
Any guess as to how long before these marketing geniuses start telling us they offer retinal protection in, "Amazing, life-like 3D?"

It’s no wonder why I don’t know what the hell anyone is talking about anymore.
Apparently Barret-Jackson has their own channel now, and I am holding them personally responsible for all these ridiculous new labels.
Resto-mod?
Pro….touring?
Clearly these labels are just more words we can throw on the pile of dung that is the Trickle up Vernacular but one in particular has left me scratching my head.
Across their stage rolled what appeared to be a 1970 Chevelle, yet the caption in the upper right hand corner of my screen told me that this $34,000 Chevy was a “1970 Re-Creation.”
I’m sorry, a what?
Now, I don’t know much but I’m pretty sure I was looking at an actual car.
Unless of course, it was sculpted from tofu, but I’d like to think the bobble-headed idiot with a microphone (I’m sorry, but I’m beginning to think Steve Magnante is the only person on that stage who knows what he’s talking about) would have mentioned something.
I realize it’s all just semantics, but really, why should I be expected to follow along?
I’m trying my best to live in my own world.
A world where it’s either a Hot Rod, a Custom (yes, with a “C”) or, if you can stand it, a car.
The next time someone tells me about their “Super detailed authentic resto-modded hand made re-creation of a pro touring switch bladed rockabilly-eriffic rough and tumble bobbed psycho death machine” they’re getting nothing but a blank stare.

Awhile ago I'm sure I mentioned screwing up the tank on my own "Little" Shovel project by doing this.
Well. today was the day I decided to drag it back out again, & search through the vaults for another suitable 1/12 scale tank.
Sure enough, ('cause I'm a raging geek) I've got one.

When I bough this goofy kit I really wasn't quite sure why but I had been assuming it would some day bail me out parts-wise.
Also, if anyone cares, like all the other Imex motorcycle kits there's some pretty cool bits to be found.
The only hang up is, they're all green.

I lost a whole ton of pictures this weekend & although I can recover most of them, it takes an awful long time.
These 2 passed me on the highway on Sunday.
